Owls, Avila University play to 1-all tie

Owls senior defenseman Alan Matthew produced his team's only goal on a second-half penalty kick as William Woods played the Avila University Eagles to a 1-1 tie on Saturday.

Matthew converted his third-career penalty kick 50 minutes, 22 seconds into the match to give William Woods a brief 1-0 lead. Avila responded 1:33 later when forward Louis Gallagher tallied an unassisted goal at the 51:54 mark.

Neither team could untie the knot through regulation and two overtimes.

The Owls (1-0-1) outshot the Eagles on goal 8-2 and got four attempts each from senior midfielder Sebastian Burich and freshman forward Julian Wells. William Woods freshman goalkeeper Conor Cable had one save.

Avila (0-1-1) got one save from goalkeeper Jesus Revilla.

The Owls play at Culver-Stockton at 3 p.m. today.
