Lady Blue Jays soccer team plays to SLIAC tie with Fontbonne

The Westminster College Lady Blue Jays soccer team battled to a 1-1 standoff with the Fontbonne University Lady Griffins in Tuesday night's St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference home match.

Westminster - which is 0-2-1 in its last three matches - slipped to 7-6-2 overall and is in third place in the SLIAC at 4-2-2. Second-place Fontbonne is 15-2-2 on the season and 7-0-1 in conference play.

The Lady Blue Jays broke on top in the 14th minute when junior forward Ashley Schimmel scored off junior forward Tayisah Pohtos' assist. Westminster maintained its lead until Fontbonne tied the match on Lyndsey Godier's goal in the 59th minute, eventually forcing overtime.

The Lady Blue Jays were outshot 5-0 in the two extra periods, and 13-5 overall. The Lady Griffins also owned advantages in shots on goal (4-3) and corner kicks (9-2).

Westminster closes out the regular season at SLIAC foe MacMurray (Illinois) College at 1 p.m. Saturday.
