Hornets bow to Boonville in District 9 semifinals

Fulton Hornets soccer coach Brad Oestreich loved the effort, just not the outcome in his team's season-ending loss.

Boonville forward Phillip Udinyiwe logged the game-winning goal in the 9th minute of double overtime, lifting the third-seeded Pirates to a 4-3 win over the No. 2 Hornets in the semifinals of the Class 2, District 9 tournament on Monday night.

Fulton concludes its season 11-12-1. Boonville (16-4) plays top-seeded Southern Boone (23-2) at 6 tonight for the district crown.

Pirates forward Tyler Drew broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 30th minute to give Boonville the 1-0 edge.

Hornets senior forward Austin Wilson struck on the first of his two unassisted goals in the 34th minute, sending the game into a 1-all tie at halftime. Wilson put away his second goal in the 6th minute of the second half, but Pirates midfielder Isaac Hinkle responded with score two minutes later to tie the game up again.

Fulton regained the lead in the 9th minute on a strike by senior midfielder David Lazzari.

"Honestly, I think once one team scored, it allowed both teams to get fired up like we're not going to let this team beat us and we pushed harder to get back in it," Oestreich said.

Udinyiwe's tally in the 32nd minute of the second frame knotted the game up again and forced overtime.

Boonville outshot the Hornets 11-9, while Fulton finished with a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Hornets senior goalkeeper Craig Latty collected seven saves.

"We started off (the season) and went through some tough spells there, but as the season went on, we grew as a team and started playing our best soccer there," Oestreich said. "We did some great things this season beating Southern Boone for the first time since 2009 and we played some good teams."

Lazzari garnered all-North Central Missouri Conference first-team recognition. Wilson finished as a second-team honoree and was joined by senior midfielder Kevin Wallace - a second-team selection in 2013 - and senior defender Cody Baumgartner.
