Welty earns milestone win as Blue Jays top Northwestern

Westminster head coach John Welty picked up his 100th victory with the Blue Jays in their 24-13 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference win over the Northwestern Eagles on Saturday at Priest Field.

Westminster (5-3, 5-2 UMAC) outgained the Eagles 310-280 and freshman running back Latif Adams carried 17 times for a game-high 106 yards and a score.

Northwestern (6-2, 5-2) gained the early lead on running back Josh Sinnen's 13-yard touchdown with 8 minutes, 29 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.

The Blue Jays got on the board via a 20-yard field goal by junior kicker Kevin Ludwig with 2:34 to go in the first. Adams' 47-yard burst with 14:47 left in the second pushed Westminster out to a 10-7 advantage.

The Blue Jays took a 10-point edge into halftime on senior quarterback Joe Plassmeyer's 5-yard scoring toss to sophomore wide receiver Mike Washington with :37 left in the half.

Eagles kicker Ben Lyons connected on a 26-yard field goal with 2:37 to go in the third, then kicked a 21-yarder with 10:28 left in the fourth quarter to whittle Westminster's lead to 17-13.

Plassmeyer - who finished the day completing 22-of-32 passes for 206 yards - closed out the scoring with a 37-yard strike to junior wide receiver Austin Kempker with 7:57 remaining.

Kempker led the Blue Jays with 53 yards on three catches, while Washington collected 39 receiving yards on a game-high seven grabs.

Westminster closes out its home schedule with a UMAC game against the Greenville Panthers at 1 p.m. this Saturday. The Panthers (6-2, 6-1) cruised to a 52-32 UMAC home win over Iowa Wesleyan last week.
