Westminster, Spalding play to SLIAC tie

The Blue Jays shutout streak ended at four games, but their unbeaten streak has reached five straight matches after tying the Golden Eagles 2-2 in a double-overtime, St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Saturday.

Westminster (6-6-1, 4-0-1 SLIAC) edged out Spalding in shots 9-7. The Blue Jays claimed the 1-0 lead in the 31st minute on sophomore midfielder Tripp Sheehan's goal off sophomore forward Drew Cook's assist.

The Golden Eagles tied the game in the 51st minute on a penalty kick by Julio De Leon, but Westminster went back in front a minute later on a strike by junior midfieler Kevin Knobbe on Sheehan's assist.

Spalding knotted the game back up with just over two minutes left in regulation on Joey Lesher's goal on a Sergio Vancini assist.

The Golden Eagles outshot the Blue Jays 3-2 in the two extra periods. Sophomore Raul Belman Romero finished with five saves for Westminster.

The Blue Jays host Webster in SLIAC action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
