Hornets place second at Hannibal race

Fulton finished with 59 points to earn a runner-up finish in the varsity boys' standings at the Frank Lemons Invitational on Thursday.

Freshman Mason Gaines medaled with a ninth-place time of 19 minutes even to lead the Hornets. Sophomore Tanner Steffen was Fulton's other medalist, coming in 13th in 19:35.

Freshman Nathan Quick took 19th in 20:06, sophomore Jared Eliuk placed 20th in 20:11 and freshman Haydon Windsor finished 22nd in 20:21. Sophomore Chaz Ballard earned 25th in 20:29 and freshman Gabe Luebbert closed out Fulton's runners with a 31st-place time of 20:52.

The host Hannibal Pirates scored 24 points to capture the team title, while Cairo (91) earned third place.

Junior Rachel Quick medaled for Fulton in the varsity girls' division, finishing 15th in 24:03. Freshman Adrea Shadbolt took 35th in 26:02 and senior Trezemae Wagaman came in 45th in 28:44. The Lady Hornets did not have enough runners to field a complete team.

Sophomore Brenden Dungan paced Fulton in the junior varsity boys' race, medalling with a third-place time of 21:58. Freshman Tyler Hickerson also earned a medal, placing sixth in 19:00. Freshman Sydney York finished fourth in the JV girls' run in 29:24.

Both teams will run at the North Central Missouri Conference championships at 10 a.m. next Saturday in Moberly.
