Blue Jays break away in fourth quarter for UMAC win at Minnesota-Morris

The Westminster College Blue Jays scored two touchdowns in a little more than 3 minutes in the fourth quarter to upend the Minnesota-Morris Cougars 28-14 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

Sophomore cornerback Kyree Hart broke a 14-all tie and put Westminster in front to stay when he returned a fumble 29 yards for a touchdown with 14 minutes, 13 seconds left in the game.

The Blue Jays (3-2, 2-1 UMAC) produced the game's final score on a 2-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Joe Plassmeyer to freshman running back Latif Adams with 10:46 to go.

Minnesota-Morris (0-5, 0-4) opened the scoring on a 22-yard touchdown run by running back Evan Guffey. The Cougars missed the extra-point attempt, leaving them with a 6-0 edge with 2:35 remaining in the first quarter.

Westminster responded with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by junior fullback Jantzen Bradford, taking a 7-6 lead on junior kicker Kevin Ludwig's extra point with 12:24 to go in the second quarter.

The Blue Jays stretched the margin to eight points on a 4-yard touchdown toss from Plassmeyer to sophomore wide receiver Mike Washington with 9:28 left in the half.

Minnesota-Morris quarterback Caleb McLaren connected with receiver Tyler Peterson on a 95-yard touchdown strike with 3:06 left in the third quarter, then tossed a 2-point conversion pass to tie the game at 14-all.

Plassmeyer hit on 20-of-36 passes for 295 yards and two interceptions. Adams led all players with 98 rushing yards on 20 carries, while Blue Jays junior wide receiver CJ Vaughan caught five passes for 110 yards.

Westminster finished with 434 yards of offense.

The Blue Jays limited the Cougars to 275 net yards, including a meager 25 rushing yards on 30 attempts.

Westminster returns home for a UMAC game against Eureka (Illinois) College at 1 p.m. next Saturday.
