Three WWU players to compete in national tourney next month

Senior Julian Taylor and sophomores David Houlding and Billy McKenzie will represent the Owls at the second-annual Patriot All-America Invitational from Dec. 27-31 at the Wigwam Gold golf course in Lichtfield Park, Arizona.

The 54-hole tournament - sponsored by the Arizona Golf Association of America and the Wigwam Golf Resort, in conjunction with tournament beneficiary, the Folds of Honor Foundation - will feature 84 All-American players from the three NCAA divisions, NAIA, the American Junior Golf Association and the junior college ranks.

The Folds of Honor will assign a soldier downed in active duty to each participant and that person's name will be written on the respective golfer's bag.

"I think it's great for the kids and our program to have the opportunity for three of our players to be invited to such a prestigious event," William Woods head coach Barry Doty said. "We look forward to going there and getting the chance to compete."

Taylor - a three-time All-American and two-time American Midwest Conference player of the year - averaged a 72.33 round during the Owls' fall season.

"Just having the opportunity to go and play, while representing the University and a fallen soldier is fantastic," Taylor said. "I hope we can all go there, do well and put William Woods on the map."

Houlding is second in the NAIA with an average round of 69.44, while his versus-par score of minus-2.33 leads the nation and is seventh-best among all college golfers, regardless of level.

"I see this as a great challenge and experience for me, especially in the future, since I want to continue playing golf after college," Houlding said. "The whole event should be outstanding and I am looking forward to it."

McKenzie - who was the AMC freshman of the year - is posting an average of 71.22 per outing and a minus-0.56 versus-par mark, good for seventh in the NAIA.

"To participate in this event means my golf career is going in the right direction," McKenzie said. "I feel like it was worth it coming to WWU, as obviously to win the Freshman of the Year and now being invited to an even bigger event is something I am happy about and I hope to play well."

William Woods finished the fall ranked No. 1 by the Golfstat Rankings, the GCAA Top 25 poll and the 2014-15 NAIA coaches' preseason Top 25, the program's first-ever No. 1 ranking.
