Westminster men drop a pair at CCIW/SLIAC event

Westminster scored just 17 second-half points in a 72-48 loss to Elmhurst to close out play at the CCIW/SLIAC Challenge on Sunday.

The Blue Jays (0-2) followed up a 46.4 percent first-half shooting clip by connecting on 27.3 percent (6-of-22) of their shots after halftime. Westminster trailed 43-31 at halftime, but the deficit ballooned to as large as 27 points late in the game.

Senior guard Brandon Moore guided the Blue Jays with 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor. Junior forward Matt Murphy had 11 points and accounted for two of Westminster's four successful 3-point attempts. The Blue Jays were outrebounded 40-28.

Junior forward Kellen Brondel's 10 points led Westminster in a 68-52 season-opening loss to Millikin on Saturday. Brondel was 3-for-5 from the field as the Blue Jays finished 19-of-58 (32.8 percent) from the floor. Moore added nine points, while senior guard Verdis Lee Jr. (Fulton) contributed eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Westminster plays at the University of Central Missouri at 7 p.m. this Saturday.
