Stensrud's late basket pushes William Woods to late win

Senior guard Destani Stensrud's basket with 3 seconds to play vaulted the Lady Owls to an 83-81 triumph over the Lady Builders on Friday night at the Southwestern Classic.

William Woods (3-1) led 44-36 at halftime and pushed that advantage to as many as 15 points with 13:34 remaining in the second half. Southwestern fought back to within five points on two different occasions, but the Lady Owls stretched their cushion to 75-64 on junior guard Marissa Webb's 3-pointer with 4:43 to go.

The Lady Builders (3-2) proceeded to use a 15-6 spurt over the next 4:02 to knot the game at 81-all when Catherine Cramer converted a basket and drew a foul from William Woods junior forward Nia Lateju with :41 left.

Lady Owls sophomore center Kennedy Volkart rebounded Cramer's missed free throw and William Woods followed up with a timeout with :38 remaining.

After Stensrud's go-ahead bucket, Southwestern's Tiffany Rieger had a look at a game-winning 3-pointer with no time left, but the shot was off the mark.

Volkart paced William Woods with career highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead five players in double figures for the Lady Ows. Lateju added 17 points, while Stensrud and senior guard Blake French each posted 12.

Senior guard Denisha Rice chipped in with 11 points as William Woods shot 43.5 percent from the floor (30-of-69) and connected on 6-of-18 attempts from beyond the arc.

The Lady Owls outrebounded the Lady Builders 48-32.

William Woods closed out the Southwestern Classic against Sterling (Kansas) College on Saturday. Results were not available at press time. The Lady Owls play an exhibition contest at NCAA Division I Western Illinois at 7 p.m. Monday.
