Lady Owls soccer team prevails in PKs to claim AMC tourney title

Will earn automatic bid to NAIA Opening Round

The William Woods University Lady Owls soccer team didn't get a lot of shots in comparison to the Missouri Baptist University Lady Spartans.

But William Woods registered just enough to garner its second American Midwest Conference postseason tournament championship and first since 2001.

Senior defender Danielle Wilson converted the decisive penalty kick to send the fourth-seeded Lady Owls to a 4-3 victory in penalty kicks over No. 2 Missouri Baptist to claim the AMC title Thursday afternoon.

With the win, William Woods (12-6-3) earned the conference's automatic bid to the NAIA Opening Round. Pairings have yet to be announced.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Griffin was spectacular in the net for the Lady Owls, posting 16 saves.

"Brittany (Griffin) made a lot of saves today and two of them were of exceptional quality...," William Woods head coach Randy Hall said. "I am just very pleased for all of the members of my program, as the girls on the field today did a great job bringing home the right to hang a banner."

The two teams were scoreless through regulation and a pair of overtimes. The Lady Owls were outshot 22-7 overall.

"I am extremely happy with the quality of our combined defensive efforts today," Hall said. "The defensive rotations have been on point and denied easy opportunities in spite of less than our best possessions."

Neither team connected on its first penalty kick, but Missouri Baptist center midfielder Kathryn Foytlin's try got by Griffin to put the Lady Spartans on top.

Lady Owls senior midfielder Ashley Deckard then knotted it at 1-all with her conversion. Missouri Baptist regained the lead on midfielder Lauren Guerrero kick, but William Woods evened the match again at 2-all on a strike by senior midfielder Amy Faus.

Both teams traded missed shots on their third attempts, but Missouri Baptist went ahead 3-2 on a kick by center midfielder Chanel Thorpe.

Senior midfielder Brittainy German tied the game again for the Lady Owls with her tally, but Lady Spartans goalkeeper Kathryn Kessler sent her go-ahead attempt over the crossbar to set up Wilson's winning strike.

"Now the hard part is ahead of us as we will be facing a top seed in the first round of the tournament," Hall said. "We will need to carry the responsibility to show how strong a team from our conference must be to make it to the tournament."

Deckard and junior midfielder Sarah Krispin earned first-team all-AMC honors at their respective positions. Griffin and senior midfielder Rachel Meyer collected honorable-mention accolades.
