County collector: check mail for tax statements, assessment forms

Callaway County property tax statements were sent out Friday.

According to a release from the assessor's office, Callaway taxpayers should expect to receive their tax statements and their 2014 assessment forms in the next few days.

This is the first year the assessment forms are being mailed with the real estate and personal property tax statements. The tax statements and assessment forms will have separate envelopes to mail back with respective payments and 2015 declarations.

According to the release, tax statements reflect what an individual owned as of Jan. 1, 2014. If any changes are necessary, contact the assessor's office at (573) 642-0766.

All tax payments are due upon receipt and are delinquent after Dec. 31, 2014. Additional interest and penalty will be charged for any payment received after that date.

"We do honor the postmark on your envelope, so if you are paying by mail be sure to check with your local post office about their holiday hours to ensure the Dec. 31st postmark on your envelope," Callaway County Collector Pam Oestreich said in the release. "Do not assume that if you drop your payment in the post office box after 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 that it will have the Dec. 31 postmark. By Missouri Statute, any envelope received with a Jan. 1st or beyond postmark will be returned for penalty and interest."

Those who mail payments will receive a receipt back in the mail. If an individual does not receive their paid receipt by Jan. 9 they should contact the collector's office.

Payments may also be made through the drop box on the north side of the Callaway County Courthouse or online at www.callawaycollector.com. There is a convenience fee of 2.5 percent for online payments.

According to the release, anticipated collection in Callaway for real estate and personal property for 2014 is more than $26 million, with more than $18 million of that amount going to local schools. The county general revenue fund will receive more than $1.5 million, road and bridge will receive $1.6 million and the remaining $5 million will go to other taxing entities including the library, fire, ambulance, cities and special services.
