Hornets' Gaines brothers complete day at Class 3 cross country meet

New Bloomfield's Bedsworth, Granich compete in Class 1 races

Fulton brothers Grant and Mason Gaines finished in 44th and 49th place, respectively, at the Class 3 boys' cross country championships on Saturday at the Oak Hills Golf Center.

Grant - a senior and returning state qualifier - clocked a time of of 17 minutes, 40.66 seconds.

"He established his position right away and just hung on to it," Hornets head coach George Yates said. "I feel like Grant ran a really great race. He looked good, ran strong and I'm just really happy for him in his last race of his career and he did just a great job."

Mason - a freshman - eclipsed his previous personal best set at last week's District 4 meet in Warrenton by :10, a final result of 17:45.3.

"Mason's splits were really even and that's just great, especially for a freshman being able to do that," Yates said.

Festus senior Michael Karls won the individual title in 15:23.8 in pushing his school 24 points and the state's team title.

New Bloomfield senior Sydni Bedsworth - also a two-time state participant - finished the Class 1 girls' run in 26:04.74. Sophomore Claire Workman earned the individual state title in 19:34.73, while Salisbury won the team championship with a score of 97.

Wildcats junior Nicolas Granich placed 130th in the Class 1 boys' event, finishing in 20:08.58.

La Plata senior Seth Brown topped the field in 16:41.6 to claim a second consecutive state title. Hermitage claimed the team title with a total of 90 points.
