Blue Jays defend SLIAC tourney title in win over Fontbonne

Westminster is on top of the SLIAC once again.

The second-seeded Blue Jays downed the No. 4 Fontbonne Griffins 3-1 to capture their second straight St. Louis Intercollegiate Athltic Conference tournament title on Saturday at Westminster Field.

With the win the Blue Jays (11-7-1) claimed the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament. Opening-round pairings will be announced on Monday.

Freshman midfielder Tanner Touslee gave Westminster the 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on assists by freshman midfielder Dustin Seibolt and sophomore forward Drew Cook.

Junior midfielder Kyle Collins pushed the Blue Jays to a two-goal lead on an unassisted strike in the 64th minute. Cook's tally via an assist by freshman Daniel Barone in the 67th minute finished Westminster's scoring.

The Griffins (8-14) got their only goal in the 83rd minute from Alex Platipodis off an assist by Tim Menzel.

The Blue Jays edged Fontbonne out 5-3 in shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Raul Belman Romero registered a pair of saves.

Westminster advanced to the title game thanks to a 4-0 win over No. 3 Spalding on Thursday evening. Barone, Collins, senior midfielder Muzi Shongwe and junior midfielder Kevin Knobbe all scored as the Blue Jays outshot the Golden Eagles 20-8.

Seibolt earned conference Newcomer of the Year honors and was one of six Westminster players named first-team all-SLIAC. Cook and Romero joined him on the first team, as did senior backer Muhle Dlamini, junior backer Daryl Doran and sophomore midfielder Tripp Sheehan.

Touslee was a second-team selection, while freshman garnered third-team recognition and Shongwe was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.
