Fulton's Gaines brothers heading to state cross country meet

Brothers Grant and Mason Gaines have earned tickets to the Class 3 cross country championships.

The Hornet siblings finished in sixth and 12th place, respectively, at the Class 3, District 4 championships on Saturday at Warrenton High School.

The two will run in the MSHSAA Class 3 boy's cross country championships at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday at Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City.

Grant - a senior - finished his district run in 17 minutes, 49 seconds to qualify for his second consecutive state meet.

Freshman Mason clocked a personal-record time of 17:55 to secure a bid to the state meet. Mexico junior Malik Holman finished in a time of 16:46 to win the district championship.

Freshman Nathan Quick finished 35th in 18:54 and sophomore Chaz Ballard ran a 38th-place time of 19:06. Sophomore Jared Eliuk set a personal record, running a 19:25 to place 45th, while sophomore Tanner Steffen finished 46th in 19:27.

Fulton finished fourth in the team standings with 136 points. St. Charles (43) won the team title, followed by Hannibal (67) and Mexico (103).

Junior Rachel Quick paced the Lady Hornets, collecting 20th place in 22:56. Freshman Adrea Shadbolt (23:17) took 26th and sophomore Katie Lowry ran a personal-record time of 23:17, good for 40th place.

Sophomore Mary Hinchie finished 51st in 28:17, while freshman Sydney York finished 53rd in 29:27 as Fulton finished sixth as a team with 149 points.

St. Charles freshman Camryn Green claimed the district crown with a run of 20:59, leading her squad to the team championship.

In the high school open race, freshman Gabe Luebbert set a personal-record result of 19:46. Sophomore Brenden Dungan also competed, running a 22:04.
