Blue Jays bow to UMAC foe Greenville in home finale

Westminster was outgained in total yardage 626-170 in its 42-14 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference loss to the Greenville Panthers in Saturday's home finale at Priest Field.

The Blue Jays (5-4, 5-3 UMAC) totaled 189 passing yards, but their ground game was limited to 17 carries for minus 19 yards.

Greenville running back Nathan Callaway scored from a yard out with 10 minutes, 28 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Panthers forced a Westminster safety with 6:57 to go, then added to their lead on a 3-yard run by Callaway to stretch the lead to 14-0 with 6:30 left in the quarter.

Senior quarterback Joe Plassmeyer hit junior wide receiver Austin Kempker on a 27-yard touchdown to cut the Blue Jays deficit in half with 1:27 to go in the quarter.

Running back Jacob Stull's 36-yard scoring run with 4:57 left in the first half sent Greenville into intermission with a 21-7 edge. Panthers quarterback Eric Northey's 35-yard touchdown pass to Andre Underwood with 11:27 to go in the third widened Westminster's deficit, but Plassmeyer's 13-yard touchdown to senior wide receiver Tony Mitchell kept the Blue Jays within 28-14 with 9:15 to go in the third.

Callaway scored his final touchdown - this one from 19 yards out - with 12:29 remaining in the fourth. Northey and Jacob Battaglia connected on a 13-yard scoring strike with 4:47 to go to close out scoring.

Plassmeyer completed 17-of-48 passes for 129 yards, was picked off once and sacked three times. Mitchell and Kempker each finished with 46 receiving yards on six and four catches, respectively.

Northey connected on 9-of-12 passes for 191 yards, while adding 79 rushing yards on 16 carries. Callaway led all players with 158 rushing yards on 32 attempts, while Stull added 125 yards on 20 runs as Greenville accumulated 462 yards on 83 tries.

Westminster closes its season with a SLIAC game at Martin Luther at 1 p.m. this Saturday.

The Knights (2-7, 1-7 UMAC) bowed to Crown 31-13 last week.
