Westminster's Hughes named second-team ABCA Baseball All-American

Blue Jays sophomore Deion Hughes was recently recognized as a second-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Hughes - a pitcher and outfielder for Westminster - was chosen as an ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Divison III Central Region First Team honoree, which entered him in a pool of players to be picked for national recognition. He is the first Blue Jay to receive such an honor and one of three St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players to be selected this season.

Hughes' eight wins on the mound set a new school record, while he finished the season with a 1.94 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 55.2 innings.

At the plate, Hughes hit .361 with a team-best 48 hits and four triples. He scored 29 runs and was second on the team with 26 RBIs as he was a first-team all-SLIAC pick and a second-team All-Central Region team selection by D3Baseball.com.

Westminster finished its season 21-14.
