Callaway aims to install video arraignment system

Callaway County Presiding Commissioner Gary Jungermann said he expects a video arraignment system to be in place by July.

Commissioners have been working to find ways to activate a fiber connection between the Callaway County Jail and the courthouse so arraignments can take place via video.

When the system is in place, inmates will be able to communicate pleas and other information to a judge without traveling.

Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney Chris Wilson and public defenders gave the commission the OK for video arraignment, Jungermann said.

He added that the commission anticipates video arraignment will lessen liability and safety issues associated with transporting inmates and it will save the county on transportation costs.

The video arraignment system, which is expected to cost between $1,500 to $2,000, also has the potential to be used in other ways such as meetings, Jungermann said.
