Senior Nick Jones will attempt to add to his mark on the Missouri School for the Deaf’s rich track and field tradition.
Jones will cap off his high school career by trying to repeat as state champion in the 100 and 200 meters when the Class 1 state championships begin today at Lincoln University’s Dwight T. Reed Stadium in Jefferson City.
Jones ensured that he would get the chance to win consecutive titles in both events after logging the top time and fourth-fastest qualifying time in the state, respectively, by winning the 100 (11.19 seconds) and 200 (:23.17) at last weekend’s Sectional 1 championships at Principia High School in St. Louis.
He captured state championships in the 100 and 200 last year with respective times of :11.22 and :22.41. Jones also medalled by taking second in the 400 (:51.36) and third in the long jump (21 feet even), en route to directing MSD to a fourth-place team finish by himself.
The 100 preliminaries are scheduled for 1:10 p.m. today, followed by the 200 prelims at 4:35. The 100 and 200 finals are set for 12:50 and 2:55 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
Jones also is returning to state in the 400 and long jump. The 400 prelims will be at 3:20 p.m. today, with the finals set for 2:05 p.m. Saturday. The long jump finals are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday.
