Lady Bulldogs, Bulldogs sweep titles in own South Callaway Relays

The South Callaway girls' and boys' track and field teams left plenty of room to spare.

The Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs combined to win 15 events in easily bolting to a sweep of the team championships at their annual South Callaway Relays on Friday.

Junior Hannah Oberdiek was victorious in three events and senior Taylor Howard won two as South Callaway amassed 182 points to secure the girls' title in dominating fashion. Fatima was far back in second place with 125.5 points and Hallsville came in third with 92.

Junior Mason Shoemaker and senior Josh Brooks both supplied a pair of victories as South Callaway logged 151 points to clinch the boys' championship. Hallsville finished second with 117 points and Southern Boone took third with 112.

Oberdiek triumphed in the 100 and 200 meters with respective times of 13.05 and 27.13 seconds, respectively, and prevailed in the long jump at 16 feet, 9 3/4 inches. She was also a member of the Lady Bulldogs' 400 relay - joining freshman Sierra Bickell, senior Bailey Ward and junior Alexis Wetherell - that was victorious in :52.57.

Howard won the 400 in 1:00.65 and took first in the pole vault with a height of 9-0. She finished second behind Oberdiek in the 100 (:13.15) and placed second in the 800 (2:35.93).

Ward was victorious in the 300 hurdles (:51.61), while junior Sarah Jennings triumphed in the high jump (5-0). Ward also came in second in the 100 hurdles (:17.46) and Jennings finished third in the triple jump (32-1 3/4).

Among the primary finishers for the Lady Bulldogs were senior Karli Leeper, second in the shot put (32-4); the 1,600 relay of Wetherell, senior Andrea Rodriguez, freshman Caitlyn Chapman and Bickell, second in 4:44.59; Bickell, third in the 100 hurdles (:18.32); Rodriguez, third in the 1,600 (6:01.90) and fourth in the 800 (2:40.84);

senior Abigail Luebbert, third in the 3,200 (13:11.45) and fourth in the 1,600 (6:10.27); the 3,200 relay of Luebbert, sophomores Dariyn Finney and Amanda McDonald, and Rodriguez, third in 11:15.43; senior Marina Wimmer, fourth in the shot put (30-11), and Finney, fifth in the 3,200 (13:41.81).

Shoemaker prevailed in the 100 in :11.36 and broke his own school record in the 200 with his winning time of :23.06. He was also a member of the Bulldogs' 1,600 relay - along with junior Terry Miles, senior Ethan Ward and junior Cory Hanger - that was victorious in 3:38.28.

Brooks triumphed in the shot put and discus with throws of 43-11 and 132-5 1/2, respectively.

Senior Garner Rudroff won the long jump in 20-10 and was part of the 800 relay - teaming with sophomore Ajay Cave and seniors Seth Markley and Korey Bonine - that finished first in 1:38.91. Rudroff came in second in the triple jump (43-4 1/2) and was part of the 400 relay - joining Cave, Markley and Hanger - that placed second in :45.91.

Other top finishers for the Bulldogs included Hanger, second in the 400 (:52.43, surpassed his own school record); Miles, second in the high jump (6-0) and third in the 800 (2:11.76); the 3,200 relay of Miles, Hanger, sophomore Brandon Ward and Ethan Ward, second in 9:27.16; senior Tristan Peneston, third in the triple jump (40-4 3/4); Ethan Ward, fourth in the 300 hurdles (:45.39); Markley, fourth in the long jump (17-3/4), and freshman Bennett Hager, fifth in the pole vault (10-6).

The New Bloomfield girls, led by senior Morgan Mattern's fifth-place finish in the 100 hurdles (:19.76), came in 10th overall with 12 points. On the boys' side, sophomore Charlie Schattgen took fifth in the 3,200 (11:30.98) as New Bloomfield placed 10th with 8 points.

South Callaway and New Bloomfield both compete at the Class 2, District 3 championships in Cuba on Saturday.
