Chambliss, Westminster baseball team down SLIAC foe Spalding

Junior first baseman Tim Chambliss' two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 2-all tie and and guided the Blue Jays to a SLIAC win over the Golden Eagles on Friday night at Saucier Field.

The Blue Jays (21-12, 15-10 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) closed out the series - and regular season - with a doubleheader against Spalding (Ky.) University on Saturday. Results were not available at press time.

Senior designated hitter Ben Schwarz began Westminster's fifth with a single, then moved to second when junior second baseman Cam Backes was hit by a pitch. Schwarz advanced to third on an error by the catcher with one out, then scored along with Backes on Chambliss' double.

Sophomore left fielder Deion Hughes plated Chambliss on the next at-bat with an RBI single to push the Blue Jays to a 5-2 edge.

The Golden Eagles (24-13, 17-7) added their final run in the ninth on a one-out single by right fielder Nathan Greenwell off Westminster sophomore starter Will Miller. Deion Hughes came in from left field to relieve Miller and struck out the final two Spalding batters to pick up his first save of the year.

Miller (5-3) used a season-high 13 strikeouts to pick up the win. He threw 8 1/3 innings, allowed seven hits, three runs - two earned - and issued two walks.

Chambliss finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles as the Blue Jays accumulated 11 hits. Schwarz also went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while sophomore right fielder Ryan Loethen was 2-for-4.

Westminster tussled with second-ranked Webster University for a marathon 19 innings Thursday night, eventually bowing to the Gorloks 2-1 in SLIAC play at Saucier Field. Catcher Zach Allam knocked in the winning run for the Gorloks in the top of the 19th off Blue Jays sophomore reliever Collin Brinker, a North Callaway graduate.

Webster broke the lengthy scoreless stretch with a run in the top of the 13th. The Blue Jays were able to extend the game in their half of the inning when senior shortstop Danton Hughes doubled home junior third baseman Tyler Branneky with no outs to tie it at 1-all.

Freshman catcher Nolan Bax was 2-for-2 and sophomore designated hitter Jacob Holtgraewe went 2-for-4 as Westminster edged the Gorloks in hits, 11-10. Sophomore left fielder Deion Hughes finished 2-for-8.

Brinker (2-4) took the loss, giving up an unearned run on three hits in four innings. He struck out four.
