Our House to host wine tasting fundraiser

Serenity Valley Winery is hosting the third annual Our House: Caring for Callaway's Homeless Wine Tasting 5-7 p.m. Monday, May 5.

Serenity Valley owner Regina Ruppert said she will be offering samples of six of her wines, with appetizers to be provided by Our House.

Our House Executive Director Brad Sheppard said there also will be live music from a local bluegrass/gospel band.

Last year's event raised approximately $1,000, and Sheppard said they are hoping to raise at least that much again this year.

"Our main need is just operational costs," Sheppard said, noting it costs $245 a night to cover expense for staffing, utilities, insurance and providing assistance to clients at Our House, which includes the Wiley House overnight shelter and Haven House family shelter.

According to Sheppard, Wiley House has seen record numbers so far this year.

"We haven't had any down time since the first of the year," he said. "The last three months have all been the highest numbers for the house since we opened - we had 10 a night on average in April."

Although monetary donations are needed to help pay for daily operations, Sheppard said in-kind donations of things like paper goods and cleaning products are always welcome as well because "that helps keep those costs down."

With the forecast for Monday currently at 81 degrees and sunny, Sheppard said he is looking forward to a good turnout and strong support for Our House.

"It's a great way to spend time with friends and support a great cause," Sheppard said.

Ruppert said she also would encourage area residents to come out "if they enjoy wine and a beautiful setting."

Tickets for the wine tasting are $20 and are available at the door or in advance by calling Our House at (573) 642-6065.
