Kemper, Hanger spark Bulldogs to win in opener

South Callaway senior pitcher Smith Kemper drove in three runs and junior center fielder Cory Hanger hit a two-run home run as the Bulldogs opened their season under new head coach Heath Lepper by downing Centralia 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Leeper took over at South Callaway when Jared Wood left after two seasons to become (Columbia) Battle's new head coach. Wood guided the Bulldogs to the Class 2 state championship in 2012.

"It's always a good one when you start the season off with a win, especially at a new school," Lepper said. "The kids kept working hard; they battled in every at-bat and kept banging."

Tipton 3

NEW BLOOMFIELD - Junior starter Brady Wiler went the distance and struck out eight as the Wildcats notched their first win of the season over the Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Wiler surrendered two hits and walk while hitting a batter as Tipton scored three runs in the top of the first inning to grab an early lead. He settled down from there, allowing just two hits and no walks the rest of the game as he finished at 80 pitches.

"He started mixing up his pitches better in the second through seventh inning," New Bloomfield head coach Brandon Talbot said. "He stayed ahead of the count with the curveball and changeup, especially in the top of the lineup."
