The 2013 Fulton Independence Day Parade featured area World War II veterans as the grand marshals. This year's parade, set for 11 a.m. on Friday, July 4, will honor Korean War veterans.

The third annual Fulton Independence Day Parade will honor Korean War veterans, who will serve as the grand marshals on Friday, July 4.

Line up begins at 9 a.m. at the south entrance of William Woods University, with the parade set to start at 11 a.m. The route is slightly different this year, moving south on Nichols Street to 10th Street, East on 10th to Court Street, south on Court Street and ending in Memorial Park.

There once again will be a children's bike decorating contest and a brief program at the end of the parade. There also will be food and drinks available at the park.

There is no entry fee to participate in the parade. Applications are available at Fulton City Hall and the Fulton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Parade founder David Beaver said the event has been popular because it gives area residents a way to celebrate their country without leaving home.

"I remember sometime in the late '50s there used to be an all-day celebration and then it kind of just disappeared," Beaver said. "It got to where I was leaving town to go to another community to join their celebration, so a discussion came up about starting something in our community. We just wanted to see if we could get something going and get people to celebrate with us."
