WWU tabs Meier to head tennis teams

William Woods has officially named Lauren Meier as the head coach of its men's and women's tennis teams.

The school originally fielded a women's squad from 1976-1999 while this will be the inaugural season for the men's team.

"She played a major role in building two successful programs at Georgia Gwinnett and I believe she can do the same here at William Woods," William Woods director of athletics Jason Vittone said.

Meier spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach of the men's and women's tennis teams at Georgia Gwinnett College and led each to its first-ever national titles in 2014. The Grizzlies finished with an unblemished 21-0 mark and the Lady Grizzlies concluded their campaign at 18-4.

The two teams sent a combined 14 players to the NAIA All-American team, including five first-team selections. Meier earned ITA/NAIA Regional Men's and Women's Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2014. Before her time at Georgia Gwinnett, Meier was an assistant women's coach at Georgia State University.

"I am extremely grateful to be presented with such a prestigious honor," Meier said. "I look forward to representing the William Woods Owls at the conference and national levels and building, yet another, athletic legacy for WWU."
