STURGEON The sizzling South Callaway Bulldogs put themselves in position to play for a title.
Fourth-seeded South Callaway advanced to the championship of the 30th-annual Sturgeon Invitational Tournament by toppling host and top-seeded Sturgeon in an 82-74 semifinal victory Thursday night.
The game was tied 20-20 after one quarter and South Callaway — which has won seven straight and 11 of its last 12 — owned slight leads of 42-41 at halftime and 60-59 going into the fourth quarter. South Callaway opened up a 74-64 advantage with 2 minutes, 47 seconds to play.
Three Hornets receive
academic all-state honors
Fulton seniors Tanner Eliuk, Dalton Horstmeier and Joe Schlemeier were named to the academic all-state team by the Missouri Football Coaches Association on Wednesday.
To qualify, scholar-athletes must score a 25 or higher on the ACT, have a non-weighted grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and be in the top 10 percent of their graduating class.

The Lady Hornets slipped to 1-4 on the season after Thursday night’s five-point loss to the Lady Spartans at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium.
Junior guard Laurel Royer paced Fulton with 14 points, while freshman forward Gentry Totta recorded a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Sophomore center Crystal Tilson also collected nine rebounds and freshman guard Kenzie Archer came up with eight steals.

COLUMBIA — The Lady Owls shot just 25 percent as a team and equaled a season-low output in their American Midwest Conference loss to the No. 15 Lady Cougars on Thursday night.
William Woods University — which has lost two in a row — fell behind 16-0 to start the game and trailed 45-25 at halftime. The Lady Owls (13-7, 6-6 AMC) shot just 19 percent (7-of-36) in the first 20 minutes.
Columbia would stretch its lead to as many as 38 points late in the game as they finished off the season sweep of the Lady Owls.
