Volkart, Lady Owls hammer Stephens in AMC blowout

COLUMBIA - Points were in surplus again for the William Woods University Lady Owls, and came from just about everyone.

Freshman center Kennedy Volkart delivered a team-high 13 points and 14 of 15 William Woods players scored Saturday afternoon as the Lady Owls dismantled undermanned Stephens College 82-46 in an American Midwest Conference mismatch.

The victory was the third in a row for William Woods, which improved to 12-5 overall and 5-4 in the AMC. The Lady Owls also scored at least 80 points for the fourth straight game.

Junior guard Verdis Lee Jr. scored 12 of his team-high 14 points in the first half as the host Blue Jays cruised to the SLIAC victory over the winless Beavers on Saturday afternoon.

Lee - a 2010 Fulton graduate - connected on 5-of-8 field goals and was 4-of-6 from 3-point range while adding three assists and three rebounds.

Westminster College (8-7, 5-3 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) led by as many as 22 points in the first half and carried a 41-22 advantage into halftime. Senior guard Jordan Jones was the only other double-figure scorer for the Blue Jays, coming off the bench to contribute 12 points.

MAYFIELD, Ky. - The Owls went scoreless over the final 4 minutes and were stunned in Thursday night's AMC loss when the Cougars made four free throws in the last 14 seconds.

William Woods University - which led by as many as 14 points in the first half and 10 in the second half - took a 62-59 lead after junior forward Nate Bitner hit the first of two free throws with 3 minutes, 58 seconds remaining. It would turn out to be the Owls' last point of the game.

Mid-Continent University closed within a point when Ryan Randolph scored on a putback with :51 to play. Joe Gilmore then put the Cougars in front to stay at 63-62 when he hit a pair of free throws with :14 left.

Reggie Elkins clinched Mid-Continent's comeback by adding a pair of free throws with :05 to go.
