RUSSELLVILLE - Junior forward Ashley Kelley finished with a game-high 20 points in the third-seed Lady Wildcats' win over No. 6 Smithton in the first round of the Class 2, District 8 play on Monday night.

New Bloomfield (13-11) blistered Smithton in the first quarter as it accumulated a 21-2 lead after the first eight minutes. The Lady Wildcats' defense was just as locked in the second and they carried a 45-5 advantage at halftime.

"Our defensive pressure early in the game was about as good as I'd seen it all year," New Bloomfield head coach Brett Craighead said. "It set the tone; we were able to get some quick, easy shots and it led to us getting some jump shots.

"So it set the tone for us early offensively."
