Hermann The fourth-seeded Thunderbirds logged just three second-quarter points in their season-ending 57-39 loss to No. 5 Winfield in the first round of the Class 3, District 6 touranment on Tuesday night.
North Callaway (12-14) trailed 12-11 at the start of the second, but an onslaught of turnovers and missed shots allowed Winfield to lengthen its lead. T-Birds senior forward Brett Metcalf tallied the only North Callaway basket of the frame while David Bauer and Jeremiah Duckett combined for 14 of Winfield’s 15 points in the period as they took a 26-15 lead into the break.
New Bloomfield 63
RUSSELLVILLE — Junior forward Ashley Kelley finished with a game-high 20 points in the third-seed Lady Wildcats’ win over No. 6 Smithton in the first round of the Class 2, District 8 play on Monday night.
New Bloomfield (13-11) blistered Smithton in the first quarter as it accumulated a 21-2 lead after the first eight minutes. The Lady Wildcats’ defense was just as locked in the second and they carried a 45-5 advantage at halftime.
“Our defensive pressure early in the game was about as good as I’d seen it all year,” New Bloomfield head coach Brett Craighead said. “It set the tone; we were able to get some quick, easy shots and it led to us getting some jump shots.
“So it set the tone for us early offensively.”
MOBERLY — A 17-5 third-quarter slump halted the Lady Hornets’ bid for a North Central Missouri Conference win over the Lady Spartans on Tuesday night.
Fulton trailed 12-10 after a quarter, but pieced together a 9-0 run in the second to push out in front. Moberly closed the gap, but the Lady Hornets carried a 25-22 lead into halftime.
Fulton (8-16, 4-7) allowed all 17 of the Lady Spartans points in the first six minutes of the third quarter.
“We just came out and were flat,” Lady Hornets head coach TJ Quick said. “(Moberly) took advantage and we came apart. It was a domino effect.”
