Second-half surge helps Bulldogs remain unbeaten

The South Callaway Bulldogs' strong second-half showing insured that they'd take a perfect mark into the holiday break.

The Bulldogs outscored the Crocker Lions 50-31 in the second half, vaulting themselves to an 80-56 non-conference victory on Saturday on the campus of Drury University.

"This was a great experience to play at an awesome venue at Drury University," South Callaway head coach Tony Brandt said. "We were able to go down the night before and let the team spend some time together before break, which is always a valuable time."

South Callaway (6-0) held a 14-12 edge after a quarter. The Bulldogs then outgained Crocker 16-13 in the second to go into intermission ahead 30-25.

The South Callaway offense came alive in the third with a 24-point showing to lead the Lions 54-41 through three quarters.

"We did get off to a slow start, (but) finished strong," Brandt said.

Senior guard Troy Hentges tallied a game-high 25 points and added six rebounds to pace three other Bulldog double-digit scorers. Senior guard Terry Miles added 15 points, while senior forward Luke Horstman posted 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Sophomore guard Blake Neuman led Crocker with 14 points to guide four Lions in double figures. Junior forward Logan Wilson and sophomore forward Drayke Hair each totaled 12 points, while senior forward Garrett Posten finished with 10.

South Callaway will play Centralia at the MRMC Holiday Shootout at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29 at Moberly Area Community College.
