Blue Jays suffer shooting hardships in Simpson loss

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Westminster College Blue Jays shot just 33 percent as a team in Wednesday night's 70-52 non-conference loss to Simpson College.

Westminster (2-7) connected on only 20-of-60 shots - including just 2-of-16 attempts from 3-point range - in suffering its fourth loss in the last five games.

Simpson (5-5) led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but the Blue Jays trimmed their deficit to 34-26 at halftime. Fueled by a 13-5 run, the Storm stretched their advantage to 47-31 with less than 5 minutes gone in the second half.

Senior guard Brandon Moore directed Westminster with 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Javier Martin Ortega scored eight points, while junior forward Matt Murphy and sophomore forward Tanner Gentges both logged seven.

Charles Swain tallied a game-high 16 points to pace three players in double figures for Simpson, which shot 41 percent (24-of-58) from the field. Dillon Gretzky added 12 points and Sam Amsbaugh contributed 10.

DJ Dafney collected a game-high 13 rebounds to lift Simpson to a 40-38 edge on the boards.

The Blue Jays play NCAA Division II Maryville University in St. Louis at 3 p.m. Saturday.
