Zalis, Westminster women top Blackburn in SLIAC play

Sophomore guard Andrea Zalis' double-double vaulted the Lady Blue Jays to an 82-62 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference triumph over the Lady Beavers on Saturday.

Zalis scored a game-high 26 points and pulled in 10 rebounds as Westminster ended its two-game losing skid. She connected on 10-of-20 from the floor, while knocking down 4-of-9 from 3-point range.

The Lady Blue Jays (3-4, 2-1 SLIAC) carried a 42-26 advantage into halftime after shooting 46 percent from the floor in the game's first 20 minutes. Westminster closed the game shooting 46 percent from the field (31-of-67) and 65 percent from 3-point range (13-of-20).

Westminster junior point guard Mackenzie Haddox had 16 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard Sadie Theroff added 14. Junior point guard Kasey Gatson scored 11 points and handed out five assists.

Blackburn (0-6, 0-3) got a double-double of 25 points and a game-high 13 rebounds from Briana Rae. Aleisha Stiltner scored 12 points and Alicia George added 11 as the Lady Beavers finished 38 percent (20-of-53) from the floor.

The Lady Blue Jays bested Blackburn on the boards 42-37.

Westminster returns to the court with a SLIAC game at MacMurray at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3.
