North Callaway girls down Van-Far in EMO opener

Senior guard Elaine Brinker tallied 10 points as the Ladybirds triumphed over the Lady Indians 57-39 in their Eastern Missouri Conference opener on Monday night.

Brinker added six rebounds and finished up with four assists.

North Callaway (3-4, 1-0 EMO) trailed 12-4 in the opening quarter, before closing it out on a 9-2 spurt to draw to within 14-13. The Ladybirds outscored Van-Far 18-6 in the second to take a 31-20 lead into halftime.

"Except for the first couple minutes of the game, we really played well," Ladybirds head coach Matt Miller said. "You have to give credit to Van-Far, they jumped on us early."

Junior forward Bethany Bloss scored eight points and tied the team lead with seven rebounds. Junior guard Erinn Bush also scored eight and grabbed four rebounds, while sophomore forward Sam Schaefer had five points and matched Bloss' seven boards.

Freshman guard Kyla Bertschinger finished with six points and three assists. Junior guard Skylar Schmauch logged four points and four assists.

The Lady Indians (1-5, 0-2) got a game-high 12 points from Abilene Gatson, while Jayda Borgmeyer finished with 11.

North Callaway prevailed in the JV game 27-21. Schaefer led the Ladybirds with 15 points, while Reyna Schmauch added eight to push the team's record to 4-1.

The JV team plays a doubleheader with the JV boys' team at home against Hallsville at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The varsity squad hosts Community R-6 in a varsity girls-boys' EMO doubleheader at 6 p.m. Friday.
