South Callaway strolls past New Bloomfield in SMC battle

The Bulldogs' scintillating effort from 3-point range helped continue their perfect start.

South Callaway knocked down 13-of-20 from long distance to vault them to an 89-58 Show-Me Conference win over the Wildcats on Friday night.

The Bulldogs (4-0, 2-0 SMC) tallied at least 20 points in each quarter in handing New Bloomfield (3-3, 0-2) its fourth straight defeat.

"This was a great team effort tonight," South Callaway head coach Tony Brandt said. "Defensively, we were able to fix several things that we have been talking about early in the season.

"Offensively, we shot the ball well and moved it well."

The Bulldogs outgained the Wildcats 22-17 in the first quarter. South Callaway added to its advantage with a 25-13 spurt in the second to carry a 47-30 lead into the break.

Senior guard Troy Hentges tallied a game-high 22 points to direct four Bulldogs in double-figure. Junior guard Jacob Smith added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while senior guard Dax Helsel chipped in 14 points and a team-leading six assists.

Senior guard Terry Miles scored 10 points, while senior forward Luke Horstman added eight.

Junior guard Grant Nichols paced New Bloomfield with 17 points, while fellow junior guard Derek Shikles finished with 11.

South Callaway topped the Wildcats 63-29 in JV play to improve to 4-0.

New Bloomfield plays at Bunceton as part of a varsity girls-boys' doubleheader at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

South Callaway hosts Harrisburg at 6 p.m. Thursday.
