Lady Hornets move past Marshall in NCMC opener

Brandt logs double-double as Fulton improves to 5-0

The Fulton Lady Hornets continued the torrid start to their season.

Junior guard NaShayla Brandt led all players with 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Lady Hornets dominated the Marshall Lady Owls in a 62-30 win in their North Central Missouri Conference opener on Thursday night at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium.

"This feels good," Fulton head coach TJ Quick said of her team's start. "This is what we've been practicing for since November; this is why you work hard in the summertime.

"This is why the girls have worked so hard for the past two years."

Brandt - playing away from her normal forward spot - complemented her double-double with a team highs of five assists and five steals.

"You can ask her to do anything," Quick said. "She's going to give you 100 percent every day, every game."

Fulton (5-0, 1-0 NCMC) jumped on Marshall for 22 points in the first quarter, then rode that start to a 31-13 halftime cushion. Each team tallied eight in the third quarter, before the Lady Hornets poured on 23 points in the game's final eight minutes.

Junior guard Sloane Totta finished with 13 points, while junior guard Rachel Guse' added nine and hauled in seven rebounds.

Fulton connected on 51 percent from the field (22-of-43) and finished with a 33-27 rebounding edge.

Molly Evans scored 10 points to lead Marshall (2-3, 0-2).

"We were looking to hit the open man, we weren't looking for our shot," Quick said. "We were looking for the open man and that's when we're at our best."

The Lady Hornets dropped their JV game 50-27. Fulton (0-2) got eight points from Kenzie Archer, while Cheyenne Wood and Lashone Hemefield had five and four points, respectively.

The Lady Hornets host NCMC foe Boonville at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
