Ladybirds succumb to Boonville in Centralia semifinals

CENTRALIA - The fifth-seeded North Callaway Ladybirds' offensive prospects were dimmed by 31 turnovers in Wednesday night's 50-24 semifinal loss to the top-seeded Boonville Lady Pirates at the Centralia Tournament.

North Callaway fell behind 18-7 after one quarter and trailed 26-16 at halftime. Boonville then took command by outscoring the Ladybirds 24-8 in the second half.

Freshman guard Kyla Bertschinger led North Callaway (1-4) with eight points, while senior guard Elaine Brinker had six points and six steals. Sophomore forward Sam Schaefer grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

"The girls played hard, but we had too many turnovers," Ladybirds head coach Matt Miller said.

Morgan Edwards delivered a game-high 23 points for Boonville (6-0), which avenged a 57-39 loss to North Callaway for the Centralia title last year. Paige Renfrow added 10 points in Wednesday night's victory.

The Ladybirds will face either No. 2 seed Southern Boone or No. 3 Macon for third place at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
