Hornets stymie Silex for season-opening victory

The top-seeded Fulton Hornets started their season and their run in the Montgomery County Tournament with a resounding triumph.

Fulton blew by the No. 8 Silex Owls 74-37 in quarterfinal play on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior guard Ricky Dawson accounted for a game-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Senior forward Austin Wilson finished with 18 points on 8-of-12 field goals and totaled eight steals, while junior guard Radarion Glover added 10 points.

The teams were locked in a 17-17 tie in the second quarter before the Hornets exploded for a 17-2 spurt to take a 34-19 lead into the break.

"We started trapping a lot more (in the second quarter) and getting transition baskets," Fulton head coach Ryan Shaw said. "We were taking a lot of jump shots early on and we started getting more layups in transition."

The Hornets limited the Owls to just 18 second-half points and finished with a 39-36 rebounding edge.

Fulton will play the No. 5 Clopton Hawks in a semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Hawks ousted No. 4 New Haven 43-35 in quarterfinal action on Tuesday.
