Blue Jays drop opener to Culver-Stockton

Westminster sophomore midfielder Tripp Sheehan logged the Blue Jays' only goal in their 3-1 season-opening loss to the Culver-Stockton Wildcats on Friday night.

Sheehan's tally came on an unassisted effort in the 27th minute, cutting the Blue Jays' deficit to 3-1.

Culver-Stockton College scored three times in the game's first 21 minutes. Senior midfielder Kevin Urbeck produced the first of his two goals off an assist from junior forward Dominic Caruso to make it 1-0 a minute into the match.

Junior defender Jacob Schierding assisted on junior forward Ben Lehmkuhl's scoring strike in the 4th minute, then fed Urbeck for his second tally in the 20th minute.

Sophomore forward Thomas Cooper finished the Wildcats' scoring with a goal in the 72nd minute on an assist by freshman midfielder Ken Oda Doblas.

Westminster College logged nine shots on goal, while sophomore goalkeeper Raul Belman Romero recorded five saves. The Blue Jays finished with eight corner kicks, to just three for the Wildcats.

Westminster plays its home opener against Rhodes College at 1 p.m. today.
