Lady Hornets topple Marshall 9-3 to open NCMC play

Senior shortstop Dacrie Depping went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base as Fulton got its first win of the season via a 9-3 decision over the Marshall Lady Owls on Thursday at the high school athletic complex.

Senior Brooke Baysinger (1-2) struck out six in a complete-game victory. She allowed three runs - one earned - on five hits and didn't surrender a walk in the Lady Hornets' North Central Missouri Conference opener.

"She threw a really good game, got ahead in the count and had several big strikeouts to get us out of some tough innings," Fulton head coach Laura Dooley-Wilder said.

The Lady Hornets (1-2, 1-0 NCMC) fell behind when Marshall plated the game's first run in the top of the second inning. Fulton freshman first baseman Samantha Weber tied the game in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly to drive in junior third baseman Baileigh Horstmeier.

Baysinger would score the go-ahead run later that inning on an RBI fielder's choice by junior right fielder Alayna Lawson.

Depping and senior center fielder Haylee Ebersole both scored on wild pitches in the fourth as the Lady Hornets extended their lead to 4-1. The Lady Owls cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the top of the sixth, but Fulton put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the inning.

"We backed our pitcher up tonight and made routine plays and also made some big-out plays," Dooley-Wilder said. "In the box, we were patient in swinging at good pitches."

Senior catcher Alyssa Reid was 2-for-3 with a walk and Horstmeier finished 1-for-2 with an RBI to spark the Lady Hornets' nine-hit attack.

Fulton dropped the JV game 3-1 in three innings to fall to 0-2.

The Lady Hornets play at South Callaway at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
