Hornets soccer team suffers first loss, falls to Fatima 4-0

Fatima tallied three second-half goals Tuesday night as the Comets took control in handing the Fulton Hornets soccer team its first loss of the season, 1-0 at the high school athletic complex.

Fulton (1-1) trailed 1-0 at halftime after Fatima converted a penalty kick. The Comets made it 2-0 with a goal in the 27th minute of the second half and then scored in the 39th minute. Fatima closed out the scoring with its final goal less than a minute later.

Evan Schulte sparked the Comets with three goals and Kaleb Bauer contributed the other score.

"The entire game we played to Fatima's strength, which was the kick and run," Hornets head coach Brad Oestreich said. "We got away from possessing the ball like we did Friday night vs. Warrenton (6-2 victory), and tried to kick and run ourselves.

"We were not making good, dynamic runs; rather, we were playing very direct and just making runs straight up and down the field, rather than diagonal runs. We did have a few chances to get some goals, and they came when we made good runs off the ball; we were just not able to capitalize on the opportunities we had."

Fulton plays its first road game of the season when it opens North Central Missouri Conference play at Mexico at 5 p.m. today.

"The positive thing we took away from (Tuesday night's) game is it is early in the season and we learned a lot that we can build on," Oestreich said. "That's exactly what we have to do as a team - learn from each game, whether it is a win or a loss, and apply what we have learned to the next game."
