Outer road near NCHS in Kingdom City nears completion

Construction of a new outer road along U.S. Highway 54 between Kingdom City and North Callaway High School continues to run behind schedule.

Project supervisor Jackie Bordeleau with the Missouri Department of Transportation said the road should be finished by the week after Labor Day - a month behind the original Aug. 4 completion date - weather and other conditions permitting,

"We've got the outer road built and we're getting ready to lay the asphalt depending on how quick the base rock cures," Bordeleau said.

She said there were several contributing factors to the delay.

"We've had some weather issues, we've had some soil issues, and when you combine a few of those things together, maybe the contractor underestimated the work," Bordeleau said.

She said the crossover of Highway 54 and Old Highway 40 will be closed today to put in new pipes and wiring "getting it ready for lights." She said it likely will be closed for four days.

Despite the delays, construction should not affect access to the school. Bordeleau sad the on-ramp in front of the school was opened Wednesday for the first day of classes.

North Callaway Superintendent Bryan Thomsen said the central office, T-Bird Learning Center and high school all can be accessed as normal.
