CALIFORNIA — Junior Steven Coleman established meet records in the boys’ 110- and 300-meter hurdles, and senior Jaida Gray followed suit in the girls’ 400 at the California Invitational on Tuesday.
Coleman set his records by triumphing in the 110 and 300 hurdles with respective times of 14.92 and 40.73 seconds as the North Callaway boys came in fifth overall with 82.5 points. He also finished second in the 200 in :23.57.
Gray created her mark in the 400 with a winning time of 1:04.57 to spark the North Callaway girls to a second-place team finish with 94 points. She also prevailed in the 200 in :28.28 and was third in the 100 in :13.47.
Sophomore Skylar Schmauch was the only other event winner for the Ladybirds, taking first in the 3,200 in 13:33.67. Schmauch took second in the 1,600 in 6:13.86.
Other top finishers for the North Callaway girls included sophomore Patri Eckert, third in the 400 (1:10.28); sophomore Erinn Bush, third in the discus (78-5); freshman Jaclyn McMurtry, fourth in the 200 (:30.05); freshman Colleen Meffert, fourth in the 300 hurdles (:55.78); freshman Nichole Kelly, fourth in the high jump (4 feet, 4 inches); junior Kaley Sommer, fifth in the long jump (14-7 1/2), and the 800 relay of sophomore Victoria Demarest, Eckert, Sommer and Kelly, fourth in 2:03.16.
Among the main finishers for the Thunderbirds were senior Devin Helwig, second in the 800 (2:17.97); senior Adam Crawford, third in the 1,600 (5:13.09) and fourth in the 3,200 (11:23.72); freshman Levi Gilman, third in the 110 hurdles (:17.27) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (:45.71); junior Michael Pezold, fourth in the 400 (1:00.34); the 400 relay of senior David Jones, Pezold, junior Mason Trams and freshman Zachary Carr, fourth in :48.57, and the 800 relay of Jones, Coleman, Pezold and Carr, fourth in 1:42.47.
Host California swept the boys’ and girls’ team titles.
North Callaway competes at the Eastern Missouri Conference championships at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 6.
