Fulton Police still have not released the victim’s name or a suspect description in a shooting that occurred at Carver Park Saturday night that sent a Columbia man to a hospital there, but officials say they are making progress.
“Detectives were in Columbia this afternoon and interviewed the gentlemen. Little by little, we’re able to get information in,” Maj. Roger Rice said Tuesday. “We’ve got a lot of legwork to do yet.”
Police began investigating what they now believe began as an attempted robbery when officers found a 57-year-old man with a gunshot wound at the park around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
A press release from the Fulton Police Department states the victim was airlifted to a Columbia hospital. His condition was not stated in the release.
Rice said shootings were thankfully rare in Fulton, and this instance was unrelated to a case in October 2013 where Tyshawn Logan was shot in the leg off Ninth Street near Westminster Avenue. Shooters were eventually identified in Logan’s case, but no one — including the victim — wished to press charges, Rice said.
“I know people are worried, looking at Columbia and thinking ‘oh my God, it’s coming to Fulton,’ but we as a department are not in any way saying it’s coming to that,” Rice said. “The long average is it happens and we do get shots fired calls, but those come from a variety of places. There are a lot of questions still to be answered.”
