Delevan, Wis. Senior Nick Jones established a meet record in the 400 meters, one of four gold medals he collected at the Great Plains School for the Deaf championships last Saturday.
The Missouri School for the Deaf boys (89 points) and girls (96) both finished third in their respective divisions. Minnesota swept the boys’ and girls’ team titles.
Jones set a meet record in the 400 with his winning time of 51.11 seconds. He also prevailed in the 100 (:11.62) and 200 (:23.27), and was victorious in the long jump at 19 feet, 11 1/2 inches.
Junior Benson Goodwin took second for the Eagles in the high jump (5-4), while sophomore Joseph Allen came in fourth (5-2). Goodwin finished fifth in the 300 hurdles (:50.27). Freshman Ste’Quan Scott came in third in the 3,200 in 13:30.41.
Sophomore Noe Garcia was fifth in both the 1,600 (5:55.95) and discus (79-11). Allen, Garcia, Goodwin and junior Jeff Porter took second in the 400 relay in :50.27.
Freshman Elizabeth Harrison earned victories for the MSD girls in the 400 (1:08.99) and high jump (4-6). Harrison also finished second in both the 200 (:30.51) and long jump (12-4 3/4).
Freshman Madonna Moore also triumphed for the Lady Eagles in the 3,200 (personal-best 16:38.46) and placed second in the 800 (3:15). Senior Odalis Araujo came in fifth in the 3,200 in 20:33.41.
Freshman Joyla Ingram finished fourth in the high jump (4-0) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (1:04.24).
Ingram, Moore, senior Andrea Crouch and freshman Tyra Rogers took second in the 800 relay in 2:15.76. Araujo joined Crouch, Rogers and Moore to finish fourth in the 400 relay in 1:05.50.
MSD competes in the Class 1, District 1 championships on Saturday, May 10, at Lutheran St. Charles High School in St. Peters.
