Fulton, Callaway Humane Society group combine forces for canine events in May

Today is the last day to guarantee a T-shirt by registering for the city of Fulton's annual Tails on the Trail dog run/walk, and this year's event features a special treat for pets and owners alike.

The annual event will take place May 10 at Veterans Park, but will run alongside the Friends of the Callaway County Humane Society's inaugural Pet Expo. While owners and their dogs are on the course, finished participants and others can peruse a variety of local pet vendors, get their dogs microchipped, view training demonstrations, play games and more.

Parks and Recreation Programmer Sharlene McArtor said Tails on the Trail is typically held in May, and when the Friends of the Callaway County Humane Society applied to hold its event on the same day, it made sense to her to combine them.

"We just thought they were both related and it would be something that both entities would get enjoyment out of," McArtor said. "I do think it's a very good thing, we always are open to working with any groups or organizations in the community so I think it's an exciting new thing we're offering."

The pet expo runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the park. Angel Blankenship, director of the Friends of the Callaway Humane Society, said that in addition to showcasing local groomers, boarders and veterinarians, a highlight of the event includes microchipping for $25. Pets that are microchipped will be registered on site.

"We have many pet-oriented businesses here in town, and this is an opportunity for them to show what they have to offer for the Fulton community and Callaway County," Blankenship said. "And the microchipping is something that's really big with us, because our mission is of course to help pets of Callaway County and to get any lost pets back to their home. With doing microchipping, that's something that can help. The more we get chipped, the more will return home."
