Flanked by Chamber Ambassadors, Court Street business owners and Fulton city officials, Smockingbirds owner Virginia McCoskrie snips the ribbon at a Kingdom of Callaway Chamber of Commerce event Thursday heralding the official kickoff of the Brick District. Though the Brick District Association has been active helping clean up downtown, organizing First Thursdays, bringing the Farmer’s Market downtown on weekends and holding several other events, event organizer Jenny Wiles said now was the time to hold the kickoff to raise awareness of the Brick District brand.
“We thought it would be a good way to get the word out so people understand what the Brick District is and what we do,” she said.
At the ribbon-cutting, Mayor LeRoy Benton addressed the crowd, recognizing that it “took a lot of folks a lot of effort” to continue to revitalize Fulton’s historic downtown district.
“The city is appreciative of what’s going on,” Benton said. “Business owners are taking over their destiny and taking it together.”
Next month, the Brick District is hosting Westminster College’s homecoming rally, a Callaway County Humane Society Fall Festival and other events.
