The third annual Auxvasse Car Show is set for Sept. 21 and will feature a few changes - including the addition of several new classes.

Registration starts at 10 a.m. for eight car classes and two new motorcycle classes and a new rat class. Also new this year, trophies will be awarded to the top three in each class instead of ribbons for second and third. There is a $10 registration fee.

The car show serves as a fundraiser for the city's parks.

"When we started doing the car shows we were just trying to help make the parks better," said Park Board member Missy Barnes. "We want to put more things in for the children, things like baby swings, bike racks, nicer tables."

Barnes said the Park Board settled on a car show as its main fundraiser because it was something that was relatively easy and inexpensive to put on - and because of its universal appeal.

"It just seemed like something everyone wanted," she said. "People enjoy it, and it doesn't cost a lot of money for families to come out."

Auxvasse Councilwoman and Parks Liaison Stephanie Leverett echoed that assessment.

"They knew car shows were easy to put on, and families can bring their kids out for free," Leverett said. "It's a way to bring people out, it gives them the opportunity to show off their cars and its good entertainment for your family."

In addition to the showcased vehicles, the Car Show will include food, vendors and drawings for door prizes.
