CARDV, artist partner to promote awareness

Fulton residents will be seeing flashes of purple and teal around town throughout October as CARDV collaborates with a Fulton native and artist to promote Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Coalition Against Rape and Domestic Violence has paired up with Kathryn Douglas for the Yarn Campaign.

Douglas - currently pursuing her master of fine arts degree at Washington University in St. Louis - will spend Thursday and Friday this week, and Oct. 11-12 at various locations to wrap purple and teal yarn around tree trunks, light posts and other structural elements and weaving messages in with her work.

"Kat is going to be yarn bombing different locations in Fulton, and hopefully it will garner a little interest," said CARDV Executive Director Erica Nanney, noting this week's targets include the Callaway County Courthouse, the Callaway County Public Library and Court Street.

Douglas said yarn bombing is a particularly good way to promote a cause.

"It provides an instant pop of color, so it's something that will draw attention, and it's a really easy medium to work a message into," she said.

Fulton residents can keep track of Douglas' movements by following her instagram account at instagram.com/theyarncampaign where she will post her location and photos of her work.

Those posts also will serve as an invitation to anyone who wants to come help with the Yarn Campaign.

"I love talking to people, and I can't wait to hear how the community responds," Douglas said.
