William Woods students help SERVE secure grant

The SERVE food pantry received $33,000 from the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, thanks in part to the efforts of two William Woods University students.

Kadie Atterberry of Kingdom City and Heath Rogers of Mexico helped write the grant application as part of the college's grant-writing class.

According to a William Woods press release, the students requested the money to purchase a pallet jack, a scale to weigh donations for reporting and recording purposes and a walk-in freezer to hold produce and meat.

"Not only will the new 8-by-20-foot cooler allow us to distribute more fresh fruits and vegetables, we will also be able to provide these items to partner agencies, such as the Fulton Senior Center and the Soup Kitchen," Julie Roark, director of SERVE's Callaway Action Network, said in the release.

Rogers said Thursday she and Atterberry chose to work on writing the grant for SERVE because they wanted to help do something for the community.
