Lady Owls hit stride entering play in NAIA national tournament

William Woods softball coach Tracy Gastineau compiled a tough schedule to test her team. Add in some dismal weather this spring, and the Lady Owls certainly began this season with a challenge.

“I think they always knew that they could do it and they could compete with anybody,” Gastineau said. “But saying that and seeing on paper that they’re not can be a little bit discouraging.”

William Woods didn’t stay down long, though.

The Lady Owls qualified for the NAIA national tournament by winning the American Midwest Conference postseason tournament. William Woods, which last made the national tournament in 2011, is the No. 3 seed in the Belhaven Bracket and will take on the No. 2 Belhaven (Miss.) University Blazers at 2 p.m. Monday in Jackson, Miss.
