Tax Wise volunteers help seniors claim $700K in refunds

During the recent income tax filing season, 11 Callaway County retired volunteer tax preparers collected more than $700,000 in refunds for 463 Callaway County senior citizens.

The 11 tax volunteers are organized each year by Willis Linneman, Callaway County coordinator for the Tax Wise program operated jointly by AARP and the Internal Revenue Service.

Three volunteer greeters meet with older adults who take advantage of the free tax preparation service.

In addition to Linneman, the other retired volunteers who prepare tax forms at no cost to Callaway County seniors are Esther Digh, Christa Daume, Jane Hall, John Harris, Nick Prinster, Dale Ross and Bob Schneider. The three Tax Wise volunteer greeters who meet with seniors who want the service are Judy Bland, Sue Fletcher and Betty Turner.

The Tax Wise service is offered each year from Feb. 1 to April 15 at the Callaway County Senior Center in Fulton.

The service is provided to senior citizens, low- and moderate-income families and the disabled.
